Ready, Set, GREEN!

With the start of March, it’s time to get ready for some of the season’s freshest produce. At 3 Guys From Brooklyn, it’s time to “Ready, Set, GREEN!” - our focus on in-season produce - in season GREEN produce like avocados. Packed with vitamins and minerals, avocados are a superfood that can be used in so many different recipes. Let’s take a look at how you can use these versatile fruits this spring!

Are All Avocados Created Equal? Avocados come in all shapes and sizes, but they don’t all start out ripe. If you want to make sure you get an avocado that is at the peak of its ripeness, here are a few tips. First off, look for an avocado that gives slightly when gently squeezed. If it feels too soft or mushy when pressed lightly then it most likely isn't the best pick. Secondly, check out the stem end of the fruit - if it is green and not brown then there's a good chance it's still fresh and ready to go!

Avocados are one of nature’s true superfoods due to their high nutrient content. They are full of healthy fats which help promote satiety as well as being packed with vitamins A, C and E. Avocados also contain more potassium than bananas and are rich in dietary fiber - making them great for your digestive health as well! Finally, did you know that avocados contain lutein - an antioxidant that helps protect against age related macular degeneration? Pretty impressive right? Now let’s get creative with some recipes!

The possibilities with avocados are truly endless - from smoothies to tacos or even desserts - they can lend themselves to so many dishes.

But, no list would be complete without guacamole! Here is our favorite recipe for some delicious homemade guacamole:

Ingredients:

- 2 ripe avocados

- 1/2 red onion (finely diced)

- 2 cloves garlic (minced)

- 1 jalapeño pepper (seeded & minced)

- 1 lime (juiced)

- 1/4 cup cilantro (chopped)

- Salt & pepper (to taste).

Smash the avocado in a bowl and mix with all the other ingredients - pair with your favorite tortilla chip for a quick and healthy snack or side dish.
